Nurse Manager (Full Time)

Department: 7 Tower Medical Acute Care Unit
Location: Lake Charles, LA

7T Med-Surg Unit Nursing Manager

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • The Nurse Manager will be responsible for creating an environment of patient-focused care, defining standards for quality patient care, managing and developing collaborative teams in our inpatient med-surg unit, training new staff, and providing leadership to our nursing team. The Nurse Manager has responsibility and accountability for the successful operation of the department in the absence of the Director. They will report to the Director of Nursing and assist in administrative and clinical supervision.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Responsible for the functions of the unit including:
  • Staff/employee satisfaction
  • Safety and quality
  • Customer satisfaction
  • Budgeting
  • Manage day to day operations of the inpatient cardiovascular unit
  • Ensures staffing is appropriate to patient volume; manage census and worked hours (productivity)
  • Utilizes effective communication skills
  • Exhibits leadership skills
  • Ensures all staff take appropriate meal breaks
  • Practice consistent high-quality public relations utilizing Service Excellence principles
  • Act as liaison for communication problems between staff members and/or staff and patient, staff and providers
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (logs, emergency carts/boxes, hand hygiene, policies)
  • Participate in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities including data collection as assigned; provide feedback to staff
  • Assist in orientation of new employees on the unit
  • Ensure incident reports are completed timely; follow-up on incident reports as assigned
  • Delegate duties for staff in emergency situations
  • Delegate to staff duties for ensuring comforts of units: keeping areas clean and tidy, walkways clear, trash emptied
  • Utilize regulatory prep checklists
  • Review patient profiles for completeness; review nursing documentation for completeness
  • Monitor compliance of IV pump functionality and medication & armband scanning
  • Ensure compliance with safe hazardous drug handling principles (PPE, CSTDs)
  • Review and update med -surg specific nursing policies and competencies according to industry standards specific to area of practice; assists in policy setting
  • Maintains accurate and well-organized records
  • Able to problem solve
  • Establishes and maintains effective interpersonal relationships; maintains healthy collaborative team environment
  • Able to handle multiple assignments simultaneously
  • Create employee schedules to meet the unit needs
  • Create and balance budget to ensure expenses stay within budget
  • Assist in multidisciplinary care of patients and collaborate with team
  • Collaborate with staff to manage outpatient overflow of patients, scheduling for evenings, weekends, holidays, etc
  • Participate in effective conflict resolution
  • Report safety concerns immediately to Director
  • AND other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • Nursing degree required; BS preferred, AD or AS accepted but must pursue BS within one year of hire
  • Minimum of three years clinical experience required; leadership experience preferred
  • Med Surg Certification preferred
  • Working knowledge of various computer programs including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Must maintain required hours of in-service per year to meet requirements for CEUs as stipulated by Louisiana State Board of Nursing
  • Requires emotional stability and resilience
  • Must be adaptable to change
  • Must be decisive and demonstrate foresight
  • Exhibits organizational and leadership ability
  • Demonstrates ability to gain and maintain support and respect

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work may require evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the unit/department/service
  • Requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations and conflict resolution
  • Must have normal hearing or utilize adaptive devices to listen with a stethoscope to discern breath sounds, heart sounds, bowel sounds
