Sitter (PRN)

Department: Float Pool
Location: Lake Charles, LA

Float Pool Sitter

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • Under the supervision of a RN, provides close observation of patients. Assists in the provision of a safe and clean environment. Communicates with nursing staff regarding any changes to patient's activity or behavior.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Obtains verbal report from the patient's nurse to include information regarding the patient's identified needs such as diagnosis, visual, auditory or language barriers.
  • Positions self in patient room at bedside to maintain constant visual observation of the patient.
  • Does not leave the patient alone or out of sight unless specifically instructed by the nurse.
  • Provides for patient comfort, safety and satisfaction.
  • Offers support and feedback to peers and staff. Applies principles of caring and healing in interactions with patients, families and other health care members.
  • May not transfer patient for testing and procedures off the unit but must accompany and remain within arm's length of patient unless otherwise directed by the person performing the test or procedure.
  • Observes the patient's activity and behavior and communicates on a regular basis to the nurse. Receives direction from the nurse regarding what to report, to whom and how.
  • Accurately and legibly records data collected and notifies nurse of any changes.
  • Verbalizes understanding and responsibilities during emergency codes and situations.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience as a sitter, nursing assistant or medical assistant preferred.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment based on the age of the patients served. Ability to recognize changes in patient behavior and report that to the nurse.
