Emergency Department Phlebotomist (Full Time)

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • To provide the basic skills necessary for collection of blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques. The employee in this position will be cross-trained to perform other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Performs blood collection procedures using skin (capillary) puncture and venipuncture.
  • Ensures proper patient identification, using two unique identifiers.
  • Performs specialized collection procedures i.e. crossmatch blood cultures, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen collection, PKU/T4, therapeutic phlebotomy.
  • Keeps blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized.
  • Recognizes anatomic regions and components of the circulatory system.
  • Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
  • Utilizes laboratory computer system, collection lists, and pending logs.
  • Practice methods of preventing infection during venipuncture/skin puncture.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.
  • One year experience as a hospital phlebotomist or graduate from Phlebotomy school.
  • Basic computer skills; basic mathematic skills.
  • National certification preferred.
  • Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology and an in depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques.
  • Phlebotomists are able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear.
  • The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
