Licensed Practical Nurse

Department: LSU Family Practice Residency
Location: Lake Charles, LA

STAFF NURSE, LPN

Summary:

The Staff Nurse is responsible for making sound clinical decisions and to provide a comprehensive delivery of care to each individual patient. The staff nurse provides a wide variety of patient care activities and services for office patients, as directed by the Nurse Manager, Program Director, Faculty and Residents.

The LPN must maintain effective working relationships and communication with physicians and other internal and external customers. Excellent organization and customer service skills and ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and assignments required.

Qualifications: Graduate of an approved school of nursing and currently licensed to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the State of Louisiana. Minimum of 2 yearís experience in nursing. Excellent verbal and written communication skills required. Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality at all times. Experience with electronic medical record systems (EMR) is a plus. Must maintain Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification.

Supervised by: Nurse Manager of the LSUHSC Family Practice Center

 

Duties and Responsibilities

 

  1. Maintains knowledge and skill of office equipment and procedures (regarding the maintenance, safety and availability).
  2. Performs lab procedures and injections as indicated.
  3. Performs routine mandated office procedures without frequent supervision.
  4. Maintains inventories, assures that all sterile supplies are in date, maintains supply, equipment and medication logs.
  5. Prepares patients to be seen by the physician (vital signs, positioning, draping, social, medical and pharmacological history as indicated).
  6. Assist the physician during the examination of the patient.
  7. Checks patient record to ensure that all necessary information is present (laboratory and x-ray reports, referral summaries, etc.).
  8. Coordinates and maintains patient care activities.
  9. Respectful of the rights of patients relative to all aspects of their care.
  10. Assesses the patient and familyís psychosocial needs on a continuous basis and provides teaching as appropriate for the patientís condition.
  11. Performs technical nursing procedures safely accordingly to Policy and Procedures.
  12. Maintains a clean and safe environment for patients and staff.
  13. Maintains accurate and timely records according to Office Policy.
  14. Performs medical chart audits to ensure completeness of each patient record.
  15. Actively participates in professional activities and programs that promote educational growth.
  16. Adheres to ethical nursing standards.
  17. Participates in required activities such as mandatory inservices and office meetings.
  18. Exercise discretion and independent judgment in the performance of job duties.
  19. Accepts all incoming calls and triage in order of urgency.
  20. Appropriately documents all calls received and routes per Policy and Procedure.
  21. Takes requests from prescription line and completes for routing purposes. Refers all calls to proper physician for disposition.
  22. Returns calls to pharmacy for prescription call-ins.
  23. Notifies patients of all results; i.e. Lab, X-ray, EKG- per physician request.
  24. Triages walk-in patients according to protocol.
  25. Performs other duties as assigned by the Nurse Manager and Residency Program Director.

Minimal Job Requirements:

    Successfully completes all unit/department specific competency checklists/tests

    CPR certification current or scheduled as required

    Meets yearly education requirements for job/certification

    Completes all mandatory house wide in-services

    Wears name badge according to policy

    Adheres to absenteeism/tardiness/call-in policy

    Clocks in/out as per policy

    Completes annual TB test and flu vaccination as per policy

    Attends 75% of unit/department meetings

    Excellent documentation

    Utilizes universal precautions

    Provides age specific care for patients served as required

Working Conditions: Work requires a variety of physical activities including standing and walking for sustained periods, bending and stooping, and some lifting of 50-100 pounds at a time. The work environment may be physically confining.   Visual acuity required for a variety of specific activities. Many nursing skills require acute hearing ability, i.e., listening with stethoscope to breath sounds and heart sounds. Work requires ability to read, write and speak intelligible English. Communication with patient, family, peers and other medical personnel frequently occurs. Must be adaptable to change and receptive to delegated responsibilities
