Physician Assistant

Department: Orthopaedic Specialists
Location: Lake Charles, LA

SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

The Physician Assistant (PA) works in collaboration with the orthopedic surgeon within the scope of practice guidelines agreed upon by the collaborating parties. Provide evaluation and treatment of new patients, follow-up patients and postoperative patients in the clinical setting. 

 

EDUCATION:

  •  High School Diploma/GED
  •  Must have a Bachelorís Degree in Physician Assistant Medicine or graduate of an approved Physician Assistant Training Program 
  •  Current license as a Physician Assistant in State of Louisiana
  •  Current BSLS/ACLS certifications
  •  Eligible for Prescriptive Authority in the state of Louisiana as outlined by the State Board of Medical Examiners

 

EXPERIENCE:  

  •  Experience in evaluating and treating patients in a Physician office setting.
  •  Computer literacy
  •  Previous experience working in certain specialty areas may be desirable

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

He/she is responsible for the following as a Nurse Practitioner in the MMG Orthopedic group:

  • Evaluation and treatment of new patients, follow-up patients, and postoperative patients in the clinical setting.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as brace, cast and splint applications.  
  • Evaluation and treatment of new orthopedic patients in the inpatient setting. Coordinate care in the inpatient setting with the appropriate parties.
  • Interpretation of plain films, CT scans, MRI scans.
  • Referring patients as appropriate.
  • Assist in surgery to include deep and superficial tissue closures, application of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon.
  • Conduct hospital rounds, write orders, and take call for the orthopedic surgeon. Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals.
  • Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer medication, orthotics, braces and other orthopedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation.
