Cast Tech

Department: Nelson Orthopaedic
Location: Lake Charles, LA

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • Orthopedic technician works directly with orthopedic doctors and APP's in the treatment of bone and joint injuries. Principally, orthopedic technology involves the application and removal of casts, splints, and braces. Be able to adjust crutches, walkers and other aids and provide instructions to patients in their use. Excellent customer service skills and ability to communicate in a courteous, pleasant, and professional manner with patients, general public, staff members, outside agencies, and all other internal and external contacts.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Practice Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Apply, adjust and remove casts
  • Measure and fit patients for braces and other orthopedic devices
  • Assist Orthopedic Surgeon/APP in reduction of fractures
  • Instruct patient in proper care of cast and splints, including walking with casts and boots
  • Instructing patients with the use of crutches and DME
  • Change dressing and care for wounds
  • Remove sutures, staples, etc.
  • Assist with aspirations, prepare injections (set up ultrasound)
  • Clean and stock patient exam and treatment rooms.
  • Blood drawing for PRP injections (if certified)
  • Order medical supplies and manage DME inventory
  • Assist in making follow-up appointments and consultation appointments with specialists for patients.
  • Adhere to established clinic/office policy and procedure directives
  • EMR documentation of services performed
  • Manage patient care flow by rooming patients in a timely manner, assuring x-rays are completed and informing physician when patient is ready to be seen.
  • Perform a broad spectrum of duties including pre-visit preparation, assisting with the patient visit, and post visit duties

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma required
  • 2 years experience in providing direct patient care preferred. Physician office setting desirable
  • Previous experience working in certain specialty areas may be desirable.
  • Preferred but not required: CPR (lifesaver) certified
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to read, write, and speak intelligible English;
  • Ability to communicate with patient, family, peers and medical personnel
  • Requires emotional stability and resilience.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work requires a variety of physical activities, including moving about within and outside of all hospital properties for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
