DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
- To provide the basic skills necessary for collection of blood samples through the use of skin puncture and venipuncture techniques. The employee in this position will be cross-trained to perform other duties in the emergency department, including, but, may not be limited to, EKGs and simple patient transports.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Performs blood collection procedures using skin (capillary) puncture and venipuncture.
- Ensures proper patient identification, using two unique identifiers.
- Performs specialized collection procedures i.e. crossmatch blood cultures, glucose tolerance, urine drug screen collection, PKU/T4, therapeutic phlebotomy.
- Keeps blood drawing trays and equipment clean and well organized.
- Recognizes anatomic regions and components of the circulatory system.
- Ensure proper collection for specimen integrity.
- Utilizes laboratory computer system, collection lists, and pending logs.
- Practice methods of preventing infection during venipuncture/skin puncture.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate or equivalent required.
- One year experience as a hospital phlebotomist or graduate from Phlebotomy school.
- Basic computer skills; basic mathematic skills.
- National certification preferred.
- Basic understanding of human anatomy, physiology and an in depth knowledge of specimen collection tools and techniques.
- Phlebotomists are able to approach, communicate and positively interact with patients and other health care professionals while performing their duties, which may also involve stressful situations.
Physical Demands/Work Environment
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, talk and hear.
- The employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
