Medical Assistant (PRN)

Department: Moss Clinic
Location: Lake Charles, LA

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

  • The Medical Assistant performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. They assist the professional and technical nursing staff by performing any delegated duties, specialized procedures and assists with the care of clinic patients. To perform all other duties assigned.

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to Nurse Manager and/or Charge Nurse

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Receives patient from the waiting room and escorts the patient to the exam room.
  • Assists with patient education in conjunction with the physician and/or mid level provider.
  • Obtains and records vital signs, height and weight, chief complaint, medication and allergies in the patient medical record.
  • Records any other department specific information in patient chart.
  • Adheres to all government documentation requirements.
  • Records and/or reconciles medical, surgical and family history in the patient medical record.
  • Enters the patient’s pharmacy into the patient medical record.
  • Records patient critical lab values, adverse reactions and pertinent information and promptly reports to the physician and/or mid level provider.
  • Observes universal precautions and aseptic techniques with patient and the proper use of medical instruments and equipment.
  • Able to perform administrative duties (i.e. scheduling, registration, insurance authorization, answering phone, schedule testing, refer patients as ordered by physician or mid level provider etc…).
  • Inventories exam rooms and determines supply needs.
  • Restocks rooms to par level.
  • Conveys needs to the appropriate personnel.
  • Assist with the daily cleaning of exam rooms and clinic station areas. Assess maintenance needs.
  • Performs other job duties as assigned.
  • Prepares patient and assists the physician and/or mid level provider with set up and clean up of procedures (i.e. pap smear, biopsy, etc…) as per protocols.
  • Anticipates patient and caregivers requests and needs and responds in a timely manner.
  • Performs and safely operates all medical equipment according to the manufacturers’ instructions and protocols.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma required
  • Graduate of a Certified Medical Assistant Program preferred
  • Basic mathematical skills
  • Preferred but not required: CPR (lifesaver) certified; Current Medical Laboratory Assistant License
  • Ability to communicate with patient, family, peers and medical personnel
  • Requires emotional stability and resilience.
  • Must be adaptable to change and receptive to delegated responsibilities
  • Experience in providing direct patient care. Physician office setting desirable
  • Previous experience working in certain specialty areas may be desirable.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work requires a variety of physical activities, including moving about within and outside of all hospital properties for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to respond quickly and effectively to emergency and non-emergent situations.
  • May be required to assist in controlling disorderly conduct or combative patients.
  • Must be able to exchange accurate information with patient, family, peers and medical personnel.
