Histology Technician - Full Time - Days

Department:	Laboratory
Location:	Lake Charles, LA

General Lab Histology Technician

DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:

The Histology Technician prepares histologic and cytologic slides for microscopic examination and diagnosis by the Pathologist.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination, using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen from surgery.
Operates computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate, and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved for study by Pathologist.
Assists physician with fine needle aspiration procedures.
Enters patient and testing information into Histology computer systems.
Files and retrieves blocks and slides as required.
Disposes of specimens according to policies and procedures.
Performs quality control as required.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

High school graduate or equivalent required.
One year clinical histology tech experience preferred.
Basic computer skills; Able to operate mathematical machinery such as calculators and computers.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear.
The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be at risk for exposure to blood-borne pathogens and tuberculosis.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Mental competence and alertness, dexterity and accuracy of physical movements; clear, concise, pleasant speaking abilities; accurate hearing is essential; visual acuity is a must; stability of emotional make up is essential.
