Operating Room (OR) Nurse Manager - Full Time

Department: Surgery
Location: Lake Charles, LA

Description of Position:

The Operating Room (OR) Nurse Manager provides clinical, operational, and strategic leadership for the Operating Room. This role coordinates and executes the daily OR schedule while ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care in accordance with regulatory standards and professional guidelines.

 

The OR Manager serves as liaison between the Director and staff, promotes a Healthy Workforce culture, and ensures effective interdisciplinary collaboration across anesthesia, physicians, ancillary departments, and executive leadership. The position requires strong clinical expertise, operational oversight, data literacy, sound judgment, and leadership accountability.

Responsibilities and Duties:

 

  • Coordinates and executes the daily OR schedule, prioritizing cases based on acuity and operational readiness.

 

  • Creates and manages the staff schedule to ensure appropriate coverage and skill mix.

 

  • Assigns the nursing care of each patient in accordance with patient needs and the specialized qualifications and competence of available staff.

 

  • Supervises and executes directives to charge nurses and staff to ensure alignment with departmental and organizational goals.

 

  • Communicates effectively with Anesthesia, Directors, surgeons, staff, and ancillary departments to identify and resolve operational issues in a timely manner.

 

  • Serves as liaison between the Director and OR staff.

 

  • Monitors vendor compliance and patient experience standards.

 

  • Serves as the Electronic Health Record (EHR) preference card gatekeeper, ensuring standardization, accuracy, and fiscal stewardship of surgeon preference cards.

 

  • Reviews, approves, and monitors preference card changes in collaboration with surgeons, anesthesia, Sterile Processing, and Materials Management to prevent unnecessary variation, duplication, or cost escalation.

 

  • Oversees reconciliation of preference card discrepancies, inventory alignment, and workflow optimization.

 

  • Utilizes EHR reporting tools to analyze supply usage, case costing, and operational trends to support data-driven decision-making.
  • Supports and implements project initiatives identified by leadership.

 

  • Seeks additional responsibilities from the Director to support departmental and organizational priorities.

 

  • Works collaboratively with the Nurse Educator to achieve optimal orientation for new employees.

 

  • Assists in coordinating and developing the department orientation program and monitors new employee progress.

 

  • Provides input for staff evaluations, including goal creation and completion of evaluations.

 

  • Is actively involved in hiring personnel.

 

  • Initiates counseling, corrective action, and discipline as appropriate.

 

  • Provides unbiased input to the Director regarding staff incidents and performance concerns.

 

  • Serves as a Healthy Workforce Champion, promoting professionalism, accountability, and respectful workplace behaviors.

 

  • Acts as an ambassador for all students and learners in the OR environment.

 

 

  • Participates in incident reporting, investigation, and reconciliation.

 

  • Ensures compliance

 

  • Recommended practice standards in collaboration with nursing staff, physicians, and appropriate resources

 

  • Monitors adherence to regulatory, accreditation, and organizational requirements.

 

  • Ensures patient safety and infection prevention standards are upheld at all times.

 

Financial & Strategic Oversight

  • Provide input  and  help manage departmental budgets.
  • Monitor labor costs, premium pay, and overtime utilization.
  • Participate in service line expansion planning.
  • Support capital equipment evaluation and acquisition.
  • Analyze operational data to drive efficiency and quality improvement initiatives.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required or Associates Degree Nursing (ADN) working towards BSN considered with combination of experience.
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license required.
  • BLS , PALS and ACLS required.
  • CNOR preferred.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of perioperative nursing experience required
  • Minimum 2 years leadership or charge nurse experience is strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage high-acuity, high-volume surgical operations.

Physical Demands/Work Environment

  • Work may require evenings, nights, weekends, holidays and/or a flexible schedule depending on the needs of the unit/department/service. 
  • Requires professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to deal with stressful situations and conflict resolution.
